Recording Gear for the Creative Process with Trivium’s Matt Heafy

by Matt Heafy, Lead vocalist and guitarist of Trivium
Ease of use and organization are two essentials for me that lead to a good creative flow; clutter and complication simply stop up creativity and aggravate. I need the ability to go in and out of combinations of sounds quickly and with ease.

In big studio settings, there are typically clusters of heads, cabs, pedals, mics, rooms, instruments, etc. that create a messy environment to work in. With MainStage and Logic, many of the best sounds have been modeled very closely and accurately to the originals but without all of the enormous amounts of gear and clutter. As amazing as it is to have the real thing swapping in and out, I prefer modeling when it comes to writing and recording.

Trivium has always been the main writing focus and priority, but a few of my musical heroes have been Hans Zimmer, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Nobuo Uematsu. Recently, I’ve started bridging into scoring and sound tracking. Hopefully I’ll be able to progress to movies, tv, and games someday, but until then, I’ll keep training with local projects.

With the ONE, its versatility to be able to record anywhere with the ease of great functionality allows for change of environments; and now that I’ve been able to use the GiO, I can cycle through modeled tones and instrument settings (with either my Gibson Les Paul Customs, Gibson Explorers or a Gibson SJ-300 Acoustic) literally without my hands. It is very important to have the creation tools (brain and hands or voice) unchained by difficult processes in order to achieve the outcome you want easily, and for me having technologically intuitive/simplistic tools to get to the result is key.
